Saanich Fire Department celebrates centennial

The Saanich Fire Department has kicked off its centennial year by honouring the past and looking forward to the future.

Since 1919, the Saanich Fire Department has grown to 123 uniformed members and seven support staff. Staff operate out of three fire stations and respond to approximately 46-hundred emergency incidents each year.

Saanich Fire Chief Michael Burgess says it's not just fires that staff are involved in on a regular basis.

"Today that modern first responder responds to medical incidents, motor vehicle incidents, hazardous materials, technical rescue in terms of confined space and high-angle rescue servies.  So, we've certainly grown a lot."

A series of events will be held throughout the year to celebrate this milestone.
