Salt Spring Island incorporation vote Sept. 9
Salt Spring Islanders will be going to the polls on September 9th to decide if they should stay unincorporated, or become a municipality.
A 9-member volunteer committee examined the question for 2 years, and recommended the vote in its final report to the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Peter Fassbender.
Fassbender says he respects the work done over 2 years by the 9-member volunteer group, and ordered the vote to take place on September 9th.
Salt Spring Island is currently a rural area that's part of the Capital Regional District, as well as the Islands Trust, and it's the largest unincorporated community in BC with a population of 10,640.
The Committee has identified a lack of co-ordination between agencies that provide services to Salt Spring Island, and a large number of local services administered from the Victoria area.
