Tent City contaminated soil being transported to facility in Highlands
Truck loads of contaminated soil from the grounds of the dismantled tent city are being trucked out.
The Ministry of Technology and Innovation estimates about one tonne of dirt has been trucked away from the site and more is expected to be removed by the end of this week.
It is being transported and processed at a facility run by Tervita Corporation in the District of Highlands.
The ministry says in a statement that the remediation is estimated to cost around $350,000.
Testing of the soil determined the presence of contaminants, including lead, gasoline, diesel and trace amounts of methamphetamines following the dismantling of the homeless camp.
