UPDATE: Sooke wildfire now 84 hectares and 50 % contained
The Tugwell Creek fire burning 18 kms northwest of Sooke has grown to 84 hectares thanks to wind and dry conditions.
Coastal Fire Centre's Donna MacPherson says crews are challenged by lack of water in the area, and are having to trucked it in.
Conditions are also fairly volatile, with the flames eating through a privately logged area containing slash and sap-filled juvenile trees.
" Yesterday afternoon when it was the hottest and the windiest we were getting a pretty vigorous ground fire, so up probably about head height. And of course the slash is burning pretty freely."
Crews are in for another dry, windy day today. Thankfully cooler temperatures and possibly precipitation are expected in coming days.
There are 74 firefighters, 7 helicopters, heavy equipment and an incident management team on scene.
The wildfire is about 50% contained. No structures are being threatened.
