Wilderness trail connecting south island and The Great Trail opens
Trail connection connecting Sooke Hills Wilderness and the Cowichan Valley Trail has been opened just in time for the summer weather.
The Capital Regional District is announcing the closing of the gap through the new Malahat connector project which links Shawnigan Lake south to CRD in the Goldstream Heights area.
It is a non-motorized trail in partnership with the Malahat First Nation and winds through second growth forests with overlook views of Shawnigan Lake and across the Saanich Peninsula/ Gulf Islands and the Salish Sea.
“The CRD is opening the new Sooke Hills Wilderness Trail as a major visitor opportunity in the vast 4,090-hectare Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park,” says CRD Board Chair Barbara Desjardins in a release.
Overall the connection of the trails adds to the "Great Trail" formerly known as the Trans Canada trail, which spans from Nanaimo through the Cowichan Valley to Victoria.
This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the Great Trail.
