U Sports announces Athlete of the Year nominees

U Sports announced the eight finalists for the 25th annual BLG awards on Thursday and two athletes from the maritimes are among the finalists. 

StFX X-Women hockey player Sarah Bujold, from Riverview New Brunswick, and UNB Varsity Reds hockey player Phillip Maillet are the Atlantic University Sport nominees for the awards. 

Sarah Bujold is the first female hockey player from St. Francis Xavier University to be nominated for the BLG Award.  

She is one of four finalsits who are nominated for the Jim Thompson Trophy. 

Phillip Maillet, from Terrebonne, Quebec, is a two-time AUS MVP, a three time AUS First Team All-Star, and a two-time U Sports First Team All-Canadian. 

He is one of four players who are nominated under the 2017 Male BLG Award for the Doug Mitchell Trophy. 

The eight national nominees will attend a ceremony at the Martha Cohen Theatre in Calgary on May 1st. 

A $10,000 post-graduate scholarship will be awarded to the female and male winners. 

The BLG Awards were established in 1993 to recognize the top male and female athletes from univeristies that are affiliated with U Sports.
