YouTube Clarifies Justin Bieber Claim

YouTube Canada is clarifying a press release it issued Wednesday about the most-viewed music videos of 2017.

The company reported that “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee was the most-viewed music video of the year in Canada.

It added: “Justin Bieber set new records this year – his remix of 'Despacito,’ along with his appearance on DJ Khaled's ‘I'm The One’ mean that the Biebs can now lay claim to 4 videos that have broken the one billion view threshold.”

Of course, there is no video for the remix of “Despacito." (The official audio of the track has been played on YouTube about 593 million times.)

The YouTube Rewind (Canada) page shows the original Bieber-less “Despacito” video – which has had a whopping 4.4 billion views worldwide – as the No. 1 music video of the year.

Early Thursday, YouTube Canada spokesperson Nicole Bell acknowledged the error. “The original ‘Despacito’ track (non-Bieber version) is the No. 1 music video,” she told

“It is Justin's appearance in the ‘I'm the One’ video alongside DJ Khaled that gives him his fourth video to cross 1 billion. The others are his own tracks ‘Sorry,’ ‘What do You Mean’ and ‘Baby.’"

Ed Sheeran came in at No. 2 with “Shape of You,” followed by “I’m the One” by DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne. Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like” was the fourth most-viewed music video of the year in Canada, followed by “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar and “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift.

The Weeknd’s “Reminder” is ranked No. 7, followed by the lyric video for “Stay” by Zedd and Alessia Cara, “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B, and Shawn Mendes’ “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

South of the border, “Despacito” and “Shape of You” also top the list of 2017’s most-viewed videos and “That’s What I Like” (No. 5) and “I’m The One” (No. 9) made the cut.
