Dr. Oetker's leased pizza manufacturing plant in Grand Falls is closing at the end of May, eliminating 180 jobs.

The company, in a news release, cites a need to restructure it's Canadian manufacturing operation for the decision, with an estimated 70 per cent of the production moving to its facility in London, Ontario, while 30 per cent will shift to Lodi, N.J.

Executive Vice President Cécile Van Zandijcke says this announcement does not reflect on the quality of work and dedication of the Grand Falls employees, adding there's nothing they could have done differently.

The company says employees will receive a severance package "that exceeds the statutory requirements in addition to employment counseling, resume support and career planning assistance", with medical and dental benefits continuing until December 31st.

Dr. Oetker is also planning to establish a $4 million Grand Falls Community Fund to assist with job retraining and economic development, working with all levels of government including Grand Falls Mayor Marcel Deschenes.

Tobique-Mactaquac MP T.J. Harvey says his office is will also assist in the transition for employees if those affected in Grand Falls by this closure need direction or help navigating government programs and services.
