Anti-Airbnb protest held in Plateau-Mont-Royal

A demonstration against the popular accommodation sharing company Airbnb was held on the Plateau Thursday evening.

It was organized by the Plateau Mont-Royal Housing Committee which wants to ban short-term rentals from the area.

Organizers say the surge in popularity of Airbnb has resulted in fewer long term rental availabilities, higher rents, and more tenant evictions to allow owners to offer more lucrative short-term rentals.

On it's website the Housing Committee says Airbnb has also disrupted neighbourhoods and degraded the area's quality of life.

About 4400 Plateau homes are listed on Airbnb.

The Metro newspaper says about 30 people took part in the demonstration.
