Catholic Church to require fingerprints, background checks for priests, employees, volunteers
The Archdiocese of Montreal will be adopting a series of measures to protect what are described as "vulnerable people" including children.
The new 10-point policy includes obtaining references, fingerprints and requiring criminal background checks for priests and church volunteers.
The Journal de Montreal reports that the measures will be implemented by 2020 and will prohibit anyone associated with the Catholic Church to be left alone in the performance of their duties.
The newspaper says that would include something as sacrosanct as confession.
For example, parents would be permitted to watch their child's First Confession from a distance.
