CEGEP profs find reasons to leave classroom
Access to information documents show that at some CEGEPs in the province, up to half of the professors are opting not to work in the classroom full time.
Some have requested lighter class loads and have taken the subsequent pay cut while others request paid release time for department or union meetings and special projects.
La Presse reports that at Victoriaville CEGEP this year, 56% of teachers were granted paid time away from the classroom. At College de Maisonneuve and CEGEP Marie Victorin, it was about a third.
The union representing CEGEP profs says some teachers are simply overwhelmed by the number of special needs students in their classes while others are gearing back for more family time or in preparation for retirement.
