Cheese! Lemaire being taken over by Boivin

One of Quebec's most prominent makers of fresh Cheddar curd cheese for poutine is changing hands.

Family-owned Lemaire is being purchased by Boivin of the Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean region.

Details of the deal are expected to be released later today.

Lemaire tells La Presse that in an industry about to face more competition from European products and uncertainty coming from south of Canada's border, the merger was the only way to ensure a future for the brand.

Lemaire's iconic poutine restaurant on Highway 20 in Drummondville is included in the deal and will remain open.
