City of Montreal looking at global approach to fight poverty, help homeless, other social issues
What can the city of Montreal do better to improve the lives of the elderly, the homeless and families in the city? It's mapping out a global strategy to answer those questions.
Montreal mayor Denis Coderre is touting it as the city's first social development policy - a blueprint to guide the city in policies affecting everything from building more social housing and parks to policies on homelessness and fighting racism.
"There have been some policies in the past specifically but a global policy on social development, we wanted to have a bottom-up process and that's exactly what happened. And the fruit of all the discussion and consultation brought that policy. The next step, which is an important one, is an action plan," said Coderre at a news conference.
That action plan should come in less than a year.
