City readying for grand opening of self-cleaning public toilets

The city has issued a call for tenders to handle the maintenance need of Montreal's new public self-cleaning toilets.

The first five will open in May and June while the remaining four will open in September.

The toilets cost $300,000 each and the first ones will be installed at Place Émilie-Gamelin, near the Papineau Metro station, in Old Montreal and Sun Yat Sen Square, in Chinatown.

The Metro newspaper says the maintenance contract calls for daily inspection of the toilets, replacement of items such as soap and toilet paper and snow removal to access areas when necessary.
