Comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory dies at 84

Dick Gregory, one of the first black comedians to find mainstream success with white audiences, has died at the age of 84.

His son says Gregory passed away in a Washington, D-C late Saturday, after being hospitalized for about a week for a severe bacterial infection.

Besides using his comedy in the 1960s to spread messages of social justice and nutritional health, Gregory also ran for president in 1968 as the Peace and Freedom party candidate.

More to come.
