Firefighters save construction worker near Lachine Canal

A construction worker had a close call while working on the edge of the Lachine Canal overnight.

The man was working near Monk Blvd. and Philippe Turcot in Ville-Émard.

The ground under his backhoe gave way causing it to tip over. Not wanting to be pinned under the heavy machine the man jumped from the driver's seat, sending him falling about 10 meters.

Montreal firefighters were called in to rescue the man who found himself in the trench on the water's edge.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries to his head and legs.

The CNESST is investigating the accident.
