Genie Bouchard beats Maria Sharapova after calling her a 'cheater'

Westmount's Eugenie Bouchard defeated Maria Sharapova 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 on Monday in second-round action at the Madrid Open tennis tournament.

Bouchard had been vocally critical of Sharapova leading up to the match, calling the Russian star a "cheater.''

Sharapova was playing in her second tournament after serving a 15-month doping ban.

Bouchard said Sharapova's return was "unfair to all the other players who do it the right way.''

Bouchard will play Angelique Kerber in the third round.

Kerber advanced with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 win over Katerina Siniakova earlier Monday that allowed the German star to regain the world No. 1 ranking.
