Health Minister promises to help patient denied service in English
An Anjou man is fighting for health care in English for his 80 year old wife who is suffering from dementia.
The wife is spending her final days in an east end nursing home where most of the staff speak French only.
George Zeliotis tells the Montreal Gazette when he asked if someone could speak English to his wife, he was told "This is Quebec, we speak French in Quebec."
He wants to move his wife to a bilingual nursing home but has been told there's no room available.
Health Minister Gaetan Barrette spoke with CJAD 800's Aaron Rand show Wednesday afternoon.
"To me this is totally unacceptable, this is not the way to answer patients, to treat patients and their family. I cannot accept that myself, " he said.
The minister says every effort is being made to transfer the patient to a long term care facility on the western part of the island, where she will receive care in English.
