Lac-Mégantic trial begins today
The trial of three men charged in the wake of the July 2013 Lac-Mégantic disaster will begin this morning at the courthouse in Sherbrooke.
Three former employees of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA), engineer Tom Harding, traffic controller Richard Labrie and the manager of rail operations Jean Demaitre, face charges of criminal negligence causing the death of 47 people.
They died when an unattended freight train carrying crude oil rolled down a hill and derailed setting off a massive explosion and fire that levelled the downtown core.
The three men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Jury selection starts today for the trial that is expected to last several months.
