Laval Rocket name Joël Bouchard as head coach

Joël Bouchard, the general manager of the Quebec junior league Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, has been named the new head coach of the Laval Rocket.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin made the announcement Thursday morning.

Larry Carrière will now act as director of player personnel for the AHL club, and will remain as senior advisor, hockey operations for the Canadiens.

Bouchard replaces Sylvain Lefebvre who was fired last month.

The 44-year-old Bouchard played for eight NHL teams as a defenceman during his playing career. He also served as a hockey analyst with RDS, and during his seven seasons with the Armada, was the general manager of the Canadian national junior team which finished second in 2017 and won gold in 2018.

The coach for those two teams was Dominique Ducharme, who was named an assistant coach with the Habs late last month.
