Major crash on Highway 20 kills 1, traps hundreds

Highway 20 near the Ontario border was a nightmare for hundreds of motorists late Wednesday.

Shortly before midnight, about a dozen cars and seven semi-trailer trucks were involved in a major crash on the eastbound 20 in Rivière-Beaudette that shut down the highway in both directions.

According to the Sûreté du Québec, one person was killed and two others suffered serious injuries.

The westbound direction of the highway partially re-opened about two hours after the crash. The eastbound side remained closed until about 4:30 A.M. causing a massive backlog. About 150 vehicles were able to turn around and escape by driving the wrong way on the highway with the help of provincial police. About 300 other motorists were not as lucky and were trapped on the highway for the duration of the closure.
