UPDATE: Arrest made in random attack in Mount Royal Park

A 56-year-old man is in critical condition after being stabbed while out for a walk in Mount Royal Park Monday night.

According to police the man and his 31-year-old son were on a trail near the Mount Royal Chalet at about 10:00 P.M. when they were approached by someone out of the shadows.

The suspect used a flashlight to blind the pair, stabbed the father in the stomach and then took off.

After a frantic call to 9-1-1 from the son, officers closed off the park and stopped anyone who looked suspicious in the area.

The victim was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated overnight.

While conducting a massive search of the park, officers found a man not far from where the attack took place at 7:15 A.M., he was holding a knife and flashlight.

The man was arrested and will meet with investigators later in the morning.
