Mary Tyler Moore dies at age 80
Mary Tyler Moore, whose eponymous 1970s sitcom was one of the most iconic shows in television history, has died at the age of 80.
Her publicist confirmed her death on Wednesday, after reports began circulating that she was in grave condition at a Connecticut hospital.
The Mary Tyler Moore show launched in 1970, starring Moore as Mary Richards, an independent young woman who moves to Minneapolis following a failed relationship to take a job in a TV newsroom. In the 1960s, she starred as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Moore won seven Emmys, and was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role in Ordinary People in 1980.
She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 33 years old, and underwent brain surgery in 2011.
