Mayor backs campaign to rename Cremazie riding for The Rocket

Montreal mayor Denis Coderre is throwing his support behind a grassroots movement to rename the provincial Cremazie riding in the north end.

The campaign originated with the local minor hockey organization last fall, and already has the backing of Cremazie MNA Marie Montpetit, who has presented the request in the National Assembly.

The group would like to see Canadiens great Maurice "Rocket" Richard honoured instead of Quebecois poet Octave Cremazie, who already has a boulevard and a metro station named after him.

La Presse notes that Richard lived in the north end Ahuntsic district for fifty years.

The Director General of Elections is expected to make a decision on the renaming request in a few months.
