Montreal man suing to get Muslim-sounding name changed

A Montreal man who wants to change his first name because it makes him seem Muslim is angry that the province is refusing the name change.

Mostafa Benomar, 48, is suing the provincial agency responsible for civil status, after they rejected his request for the name change last fall.

He says he is an atheist, but people assume when they hear the name Mostafa that he is Muslim, and discriminate against him.

He maintains his name has cost him job opportunities, and that fact qualifies as the serious motive that Quebec requires for an official name change.

Benomar wants to be known by the nickname he's used socially for years — Stofa.
