New X-Men movie filming on Mount Royal

Just as there is in the comics, there's a cloud of mystery surrounding the X-Men and their upcoming visit to Montreal.

The next film in the superhero franchise, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will be filming in Mount Royal Park this month. The scenes will be shot over a five day period from August 20 to 25, with the first being filmed on the Sunday night.

Crews are using the parking lot near the Maison Smith, off Remembrance Rd. The area will be transformed to look like a section of New York City's Central Park.

There had been worry, and reports, that the movie shoot would close down the popular parking lot and limit access to Mount Royal.

Mayor Denis Coderre issued a statement, denying the reports, adding all activities on the mountain would be "maintained in full."

He said that while crews build the set, which began Monday, only parts of the parking lot will be off limits. The entire lot will be closed only during shooting, which the Mayor said will be taking place mostly during the evening and nights on the specified five days.

The set should be dismantled and gone within a couple days of the scenes wrapping.

Coderre added the scenes are mostly just dialogue and therefore won't be creating any significant noise for anyone in the area.

Dark Phoenix will be the third movie from the franchise to be filmed in Montreal since 2013.
