Poll indicates most Montrealers have little faith in SQ investigation of Montreal police
A new survey indicates most Montrealers want an independent investigation into the Montreal Police Department.
Conducted by Leger Marketing for the Journal de Montreal and TVA, 81% of respondents say they want the government to hold an independent inquiry into the entire force.
58% believe city officials have interfered politically with the management of the department.
The investigation launched this week is being carried out by the Sûreté du Québec at the request of the police chief Philippe Pichet and follows allegations by several former police officers that they were set up by colleagues who were worried about evidence they had collected indicating there was corruption within the internal affairs division.
The Journal de Montreal says among the allegations being examined is that members of the underworld had paid bribes to police officers in exchange for confidential information.
