Provincial police officer saves two kids trapped on ice floe

A Sûreté du Québec officer jumped into the still icy waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to save two children who were caught on a chunk of drifting ice.

Police were called to an area near La Romaine, a village in the province's North Shore region, at about 7:15 P.M. Sunday.

When they arrived they noticed two children being swept away on the ice about 50 feet from shore.

Fearing the children could fall off and become trapped under the ice, or caught in the current, the officer dove in.

He reached the ice and first rescued an eight-year-old girl. After bringing her back to his partner safely the officer jumped back in to save the second child, a 10-year-old boy.

The children were taken to hospital as a precaution, but have since been released.
