Quebec woman fighting breast cancer wins $1 million lottery prize

Alma resident Mona Gilbert spent the last few months of 2018 undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and had a mastectomy.

As 2019 dawns, she's $1 million richer, thanks to a set of Extra numbers from this past Friday night's draw.

The 47-year-old Gilbert was diagnosed with cancer in September, and she still has a few months of treatments left. She's also waiting for the results of a biopsy to determine whether her cancer has spread.

But she told the Saguenay-based Le Quotidien newspaper the unexpected windfall represents a measure of financial security, and possibly a better quality of life.

She says she's considering spoiling her kids, setting up a home spa and possibly buying herself a BMW convertible.

She plans on heading to Quebec City on Thursday to collect her winnings.
