Ready and willing to apply more salt in the winter: city of Montreal

The city of Montreal says it has responded to a need to apply more salt on the ground during the winter.

Its point man on snow removal said borough contracts have been redrawn after he spoke with some borough mayors.

Jean-Francois Parenteau added there was a limit of 150 grams of salt per square meter, but it's now up to 300.

"We explained at each borough... if you need more salt, we will pay for the difference between 150 up to 300", said Parenteau, who spoke with CJAD 800 News.

The Journal de Montreal reported in some boroughs, contractors have been instructed to spread the same amount of abrasives no matter what the conditions, when double that is needed when the icy build-up is thick.

"The winter changes, the situations change, and fastly we realize that was not enough. So, that's why we change this year the specification to be more up to date with what they need", said Parenteau.
