Section of Highway 40 on the West Island to shut down this weekend

Something evil is lurking from the dark, under both sun and moonlight, starting Saturday through to Monday you'll see a sight that will almost stop your heart.

The big road closure this weekend is on the West Island, where work on the multi-billion dollar REM rapid-transit line will force the complete closure of Highway 40, between Saint-Jean and Highway 13, starting Saturday at 6:00 P.M. until Monday at 5:00 A.M.

The eastbound service road will be closed from des Sources to Henri-Bourassa, while the westbound service road will be closed from Henri-Bourassa to Saint-Regis (with reduced lanes between Highway 13 and Henri-Bourassa) starting at 3:00 P.M. Saturday. Local traffic for stores and businesses along the service roads will be allowed.

During that time crews will be demolishing the railway bridge the spans Highway 40 and clearing out the nearly 2,000 m3 of concrete.

The Henri-Bourassa overpass, which crosses the closed section of the Highway, will be open.

The proposed westbound detour will have motorists get off Highway 40 at the 13, take the 13 south to Highway 20 west and then to Saint-Jean Blvd.

The proposed eastbound detour will see motorists get off Highway 40, using the southbound side of either Saint-Jean or des Sources to get down to Highway 20 east, to then take the 13 northbound to get back on to Highway 40.

No matter how you look at it, there will be plenty of slow down on almost all of the main roads on the West Island most of the day Sunday.

But Wait, There's More!

If that wasn't enough for you, a batch of regular Turcot Interchange closures will be in place through the weekend.

The following ramps are closed between Friday 11:59 P.M. and Monday 5:00 A.M.

  • Highway 20 east to northbound Decarie Expressway
  • Southbound Decarie Expressway to Route 136 east (new Ville-Marie)
  • Southbound Decarie Expressway to Highway 20 west
  • Highway 15 north to Highway 20 west

A moving closure on Highway 10 could make life even harder for motorists.

Highway 10 eastbound will be closed from Exit 2 (Ave. Pierre-Dupuy) until the next entrance starting Friday at 10:00 P.M. until Saturday at 10:00 P.M.

Crews will then shutdown the eastbound side of the highway between Exit 4 (Decarie, HW20) and île des Sœurs starting Sunday at 5:00 A.M. until Monday 5:00 A.M.

The Mercier Bridge will also be reduced to one lane in each direction during a pair of 12 hour closures, the first starting at 10:00 P.M. Friday, the second at 10:00 P.M. Saturday.
