Smog warning in effect for Montreal
Environment Canada has issued a smog warning for the Montreal area, suggesting some people might be adversely affected by high concentrations of pollutants in the air.
The weather office suggests smog especially affects asthmatic children and people with respiratory ailments or heart disease. Those people are being urged to limit any kind of intense physical activity outdoors until the warning is lifted.
Environment Canada is also suggesting that opting to use public transit, reducing speed while driving, and not letting your car idle can significantly reduce the incidence of smog, and the occurrence of smog days. The main source of fine particles, it says, it the use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, which are worse for air quality than even industrial activity.
