South Shore chosen for solar power experiment

Hydro Quebec is launching a $40 million dollar solar power study.

The utility will build two solar panel experimental parks in  La Prairie and Varennes.

Each one will consist of 18,000 solar panels and combined will generate about 10 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power about 600 homes.

Officials say the utility is looking to the future to see how the technology can be integrated into the Hydro Quebec network.

But adoption is still a long way off because the production cost amounts to about 15 cents per kilowatt hour for solar power technology compared to two to three cents for hydro power.
