SPVM's Ian Lafrenière to run for the CAQ?

A prominent Montreal police officer is neither confirming nor denying rumors that suggest he's about to quit the communications office at the SPVM to run for the CAQ in the upcoming October election.

Ian Lafreniere is well known to Montrealers — and to CJAD 800 listeners — as the head of the SPVM's communications office. Reports surfacing on Tuesday have been suggesting he was planning to run for the CAQ, possibly in the riding of Vachon, now occupied by Pequiste — and former Bloc Quebecois leader — Martine Ouellet.

Ouellet has already announced she will not run again in Vachon.

Lafreniere issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon, saying he's committed to his present job, and will comment on his future "when the time comes".

"We have undertaken an effort to restructure the SPVM and I'm proud of what has been accomplished up to now," Lafrenière's statement reads. "I am devoting all my energy for a few weeks more to respect my engagements and my timetables. I'm not the kind that would shirk my responsibilities to those who've shown confidence in me. It's for that reason I am not commenting on rumors and other things concerning me."
