WATCH: A brief, but very destructive thunderstorm

It didn't take long for parts of the city to resemble a war zone after Tuesday's freak thunderstorm.

A line of thundershowers started blowing through the Montreal area just before rush hour — and left a trail of destruction in its wake.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, more than 63,000 homes and businesses on Montreal island lost power, while tens of thousands of others were out in Laval, the south shore, and the Laurentians.

In Pointe Claire, workers setting up for Friday's annual Strangers in the Night fundraiser saw one of their tents blow over. Three of the workers were sent to hospital, but they're expected to be okay.

Much of the most serious damage appears to have been in the N.D.G. and the south west borough.
