WATCH: Denis Coderre under scrutiny for $25,000 cheque; Mayor says he did nothing wrong

Was this a friend helping out a long-time pal -- or something else?

The Journal de Montreal says anti-corruption investigators are looking into a cheque Laval businessman and Liberal party fundraiser Jean Rizzuto gave Denis Coderre in 2012.

The cheque was for $25,000 and it was to cover Coderre's legal expenses in his lingering battle with hockey player Shane Doan. An MP at the time, Coderre had said he didn't want Doan representing Canada at the Olympics because of anti-francophone comments the player purportedly made in 2005.  Doan denied making the comments and the two men went to court.

Rizzuto says he felt strongly that he should support Coderre's effort to defend francophones.
