WATCH: Financial relief on the way for Montreal businesses affected by city construction projects

The city says help is on the way for construction affected merchants.

Mayor Valerie Plante says the financial aid program announced Wednesday is the first of its kind.

"We've never seen this in Canada, so we're the first to try it out. I'm sure a lot of people will be asking for it, other cities and other merchants," says Plante.

Businesses can claim up to $30, 000 per year if the construction project lasts 6 months or more.

The 25 million dollar fund is available up to 2020 and is retroactive to 2016.

The Quebec Council for Retail Merchants, which represents Quebec retailers, is calling the action plan a relief for struggling merchants.

The opposition at city hall says an easier solution would have been to lower taxes.
