A judge is set to rule later this week in the case of a Brossard man facing charges after one of his dogs mauled a 7-year-old girl.
Karim Jean-Gilles represented himself in court during the proceedings, not calling any witnesses. He's charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and several other charges, in connection with attack in September 2015 in a Brossard park.
The attack happened on the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2015, in Marquise Park in Brossard. Jean-Gilles' mother, Hyacinth Parker, was out in the park with the dogs — neither of which was on a leash or had a muzzle — when at one point, one of them lunged at 7-year-old Vanessa Biron and dragged her several meters by the side of her face.
The attack punctured the girl's skull and caused permanent damage to her face and hand. Her face remains partially paralyzed.
Jean-Gilles was charged, because he supposedly knew his mother was not able to contain the pit bulls.
His mother, meantime, was found guilty of criminal negligence causing bodily harm in October, and sentenced to three years' probation, 240 hours of community service, and ordered to donate $2,000 to Ste. Justine Hospital.
The judge is expected to deliver his verdict on Thursday. Jean-Gilles could face up to 10 years in prison if he's found guilty.
