WATCH: Portion of NDG park reopens to visitors

The northern section of NDG Park reopened Saturday, two weeks after a powerful storm took down dozens of trees.

Work on clearing the remains of many of those trees is still underway, with the help of a dozen of Montreal's boroughs. Janick Walput tells CTV the park feels like an extension of the family backyard, and says his kids couldn't wait to return.

City councilor Peter McQueen is calling for public consultations on what needs to be done to help rebuild the park, including what kind of trees should be planted. McQueen says that work likely won't take place before next spring.

In the meantime, the southern part of the park remains fenced off, and McQueen stresses that visitors respect the restricted area. Many of the trees on that side have not been inspected and could still be in danger of coming down.

Officials say tree cleanup should be finished before the winter.
