A man accused of being at the centre of the longest-lasting Amber Alert in Quebec's history was in St. Jerome court Monday for his preliminary hearing on murder charges.
Ugo Fredette is charged with the premeditated killing of his spouse, Veronique Barbe, and the second-degree murder of a 71-year-old man, Yvon Lacasse.
Barbe's body was discovered in her home in St. Eustache on Sept. 14, 2017. Lacasse's body's was found nearly a week later, on Sept. 20, in the Laurentian community of Arundel.
Fredette was on the run for more than a full day before being tracked down by police outside of Napanee, Ont. He was in the presence of a child who cannot be identified by court order.
Fredette is also facing a number of charges connected to his time on the run, including dangerous driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, armed robbery, fleeing a police officer, and resisting arrest.
