Whistle blowing engineer punished
An engineer who alerted motorists to a potentially dangerous deterioration of the Champlain Bridge back in 2013 is now being forced to face the music.
The Journal de Montreal reports Jean-Claude Gilbert has pleaded guilty at an Order of Engineers hearing to charges of disclosing confidential information after he told a Radio Canada journalist about broken expansion joints on the bridge and the potential danger to motorists.
Gilbert also provided the reporter with photos of the broken joints.
Gilbert told his hearing that he understood that confidentiality is enshrined in the profession's Code of Ethics but he thought it was more important to protect the public.
Gilbert has agreed to pay a $5000 fine.
