A Rosemere woman with type 2 diabetes says she has to make tough financial choices to be able to afford her blood-glucose test strips.
The Quebec government started this past May to restrict how much they'd reimburse you based on your treatment and risk of hypoglycemia.
Rhonda Ship said she didn't know about the new criteria and only found out when she tried to renew her prescription for a third time. Medicare wouldn't cover it and neither would her insurance company.
It costs her $100 a month. She had to return to work nearly five months ahead of time after recent surgery.
"It has proved difficult. I'm still not 100% recovered but I'm just plugging along and the reason is, because otherwise I can't afford to take care of myself medically," said Ship who contacted yourstory@cjad.com.
Quebec's health ministry had said it's limiting the number of strips it'll pay for annually to "optimize the use of resourses" and reduce health care costs.
"I think it's people who are not diagnosed with diabetes who are making these decisions," said Ship.
