Niagara-on-the-Lake dog honoured for saving family from fire

A special honour for a dog in Niagara-on-the-Lake who alerted his family to a fire which destroyed their home.

The new inductees to the Purina Animal Hall of Fame have been announced and Tucker, a six-year-old shepherd and Rottweiler mix was included.

Tucker's owners say they were in bed one night when Tucker jumped on their bed and started pawing at them.

When they opened their door they were hit by a wall of fire.

Both parents were able to get their children and escape the home safely.

Also honoured are 14-year-old Shelby for getting between a charging black bear and her owner in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario last year.

Rosco, a three-year-old large shepherd mix from Calgary, who helped his owner's father seek medical attention while suffering a stroke was also honoured.

Since 1968, 182 animals have been inducted into the hall of fame, including 154 dogs, 27 cats, and a horse.

“We were truly touched by the stories of Shelby, Rosco and Tucker who displayed intellect, dedication and an astonishing ability to communicate with their owners to alert them of danger, protect them from threats, or get the help they needed in their effort to save a human life,” remarks Katy Phillips, Purina Animal Hall of Fame Ambassador.
