Maybe I am the one in La La Land!
It was a couple decades ago my friends became obsessed with Bruce Springsteen. I sat quietly listening to hours of the Boss’ music and didn’t have the nerve to confess I wasn’t a big fan. I kept thinking there must be something wrong with me, everyone but me loves the Boss. Well it’s happened again. The other night I sat down to watch the movie La La Land. Yes, the one that tied the record for the most Oscar nominations, the one the critics love and Hollywood won’t stop talking about. About 10 minutes in, I shut it off. I just couldn’t take it anymore. Again I wondered is there something wrong with me? Maybe too many Zombies had corrupted me. La La Land is a cheerful musical with the always adorable Emma Stone and our homegrown boy Ryan Gosling. Who wouldn’t love a movie starring the two? So I went to work the next day and made my confession.
One co-worker (who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution by fans of the flick) admitted she lasted 30 minutes and then had to turn it off. Another like minded friend, who watched the entire movie, couldn’t figure out why after an hour in, it stopped being a musical? It didn’t stop there, others I polled also admitted they didn’t like it, but after paying to see it, forced themselves to sit through the entire movie.
So how did La La Land end up the toast of Hollywood? Or did it? In the end, as we know, the Oscar for best picture of the year went to Moonlight. By the way, I have learned to love the Boss, so there may be hope for me yet.
