Decommissioned Galena Ferry causing concerns for locals
The recent decommissioning of the Galena Ferry near Nakusp has caused concerns for local residents.
Due to increased costs of a required refit, the Ministry of Transportation decided it would be easier to decommission the vessel instead of spending millions of dollars. Since the decision has been made by the Ministry, there are petitions that have been posted in various places in Nakusp to gather signatures to protest the decommission.
One resident Jan Dion wrote a couple of letters to the ministry, expressing the need for the Galena ferry. She thinks the decisions being made in Victoria are the wrong ones. In her letter she invites the Ministers to the area to see first hand what locals face each day.
The Ministry of Transportation feels that the MV Columbia is more than capable of handling the work load on the Upper Arrow Lakes route.
