Evacuation alert near Salmo due to wildfire

The Shambhala Music Festival could be affected by a wildfire in the Pend D'Oreille area.

The RDCK has issued an evacuation alert for the area of McCormick Creek, about 20 km's southwest of Salmo, west of Highway 6.

The wildfire started on Tuesday, and has grown to an estimated 75 hectares in size.

Although there are only 23 residential properties on alert, the RDCK says the Shambhala Festival could be threatened by further expansion of the fire.

At this point the  Music Festival is not under any Evacuation Alert or Evacuation Order.

The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre is working with the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, the Ministry of Transportation and Shambhala Organizers to make sure public safety is maintained in the event of an emergency.

Festival goers are encouraged to have a designated driver and means of a quick evacuation from the area.

Meanwhile more smoke was visible from the Harrop Creek Wildfire yesterday...a 15 hectare spot fire has jumped the fire's main perimeter.

The fires are about 10 kilometres south of the communities of Harrop and Procter. At last word, the Harrop Creek wildfire covered over 21-hundred hectares.

Neither fire is currently threatening any communities or structures, and the spot fire is now burning towards the south and back into the main fire.
