Local FortisBC employees in Turks and Caicos to help after Hurricane Irma

6 power technicians and a supervisor from FortisBC are on the ground in the Turks and Caicos Islands, to help restore the Islands power in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

That includes two power line tech's from Trail and an Operations supervisor from Castlegar.

Spokesperson Nicole Bagdonavic says they're part of a 58 person operation crew from across Canada, working to help bring back the power for critical infrastructure.

She says the group was quick to volunteer after when Fortis Inc activated it's emergency response plan.

The Island's power company FortisTCI sustained considerable damage to it's system, leaving the majority of customers without service.

According to Bagdonovic, with extensive experience dealing with damage from forest fires and seasonal storms in B.C.'s back country, FortisBC power line technicians are accustomed to working in difficult terrain and manually clearing downed lines and equipment
