RDCK update on gear oil spill into Kootenay Lake in Balfour
The RDCK says Saturday's gear oil spill into Kootenay Lake in Balfour, has now been contained.
The oil came from a faulty piece of equipment on the ferry, and that's has now been removed.
Two barrels or just over 416 litres of emulsified oil and water solution were recovered.
Monitoring and sampling has been done along the shore as far as Heuston Rd to ensure there is no residual product and to identify areas that require further remediation.
Experts say the oil seen on the water as a shiny sheen and a rainbow sheen are at very low quantities that will dissipate or have already dissipated.
Booms were also placed around the spill.
Water sample results should be back by Friday.
