David Bowie App Debuts On His Birthday
A mobile app that brings an acclaimed David Bowie exhibition to life debuted Tuesday, which would have been the music icon’s 72nd birthday.
David Bowie Is…, which ran in 12 cities around the world – including Toronto in 2013 – is now an Augmented Reality (AR) mobile app that allows fans to experience more than 500 high-resolution captures of Bowie’s costumes, sketches, notes, handwritten lyrics, music videos and original art.
The app, which will be available for iOS and Android, also contains 60 new items. In Canada, it sells for $10.99.
Designed by Planeta, the app is narrated by actor Gary Oldman.
“This brings the amazing David Bowie is exhibition to a wider audience,” he said, in a release. “It’s great that his fans get to experience it. It was a privilege to be involved.”
Oldman met Bowie, who died in 2016, in the late ‘80s and appeared together in the 1996 film Basquiat. Oldman also played a priest in the video for Bowie’s 2013 song “The Next Day.”
