A couple of grass fires in Fruitvale this week a concern for firefighters

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue crews were called out to a couple of grass fires in the Fruitvale area this week.

Fire Chief Dan Derby says one of the concerns about burning this time of year is that a lot of the grass that was dead standing last fall is dried and frozen over the winter, and just as flammable in the spring  before it greens up.

There are also rules involved when it comes to burning, including following the venting index.

Derby says residents need to be aware of local rules and they're different for different jurisdictions depending on where  you live.

Call your local municipality or BC Wildfire Service to check on regulations.

The fire danger rating is already moderate in spots around the region.
